  1. Which exhibition in the museum did Jane enjoy the most?

A: How was the museum, Jane? You were looking forward to the historical clothing exhibition the most, right?

B: Sure. I like seeing clothes that people used to wear in the past. However, I enjoyed this exhibition much less than some of the other ones.

A: Really? And what about the camera exhibition? It’s said to be the most interesting exhibition of the year.

B: If you’re a fan of cameras, you’ll surely enjoy it. I’d always enjoyed seeing other art pieces more than the camera exhibition, but my boyfriend liked it very much.

A: I must see them and the antique clocks and watches exhibition as well.

B: Oh, the clocks. But don’t miss the new historical photograph exhibition there. It’s in the hall opposite the clock exhibition. My boyfriend insisted on going there before seeing the clocks. I was disappointed at first. You know, I don’t usually like photos. But there’s so much to admire, much more than in the other exhibitions.

2. What does the man wear when he goes cycling in winter?

When I go cycling in winter, my mum usually tells me to get dressed properly. She always wants me to wear gloves and a cap. I told her many times that while I can’t imagine riding a bike without gloves, wearing a cap is uncomfortable for me. But she kept telling me that I should try it and even gave me one for my birthday. It’s so thin that it feels like I’m not wearing a cap on my head at all. So now I always wear one. Before, the only other thing I was willing to put on besides my gloves was a scarf. It’s true that the scarf was really useful because I could wrap it around my neck and also cover my ears with the scarf. But thanks to my mum’s birthday present, now I can cycle without it. My ears stay warm and my neck is protected well enough by the jacket I always wear.

3. What was Anna doing yesterday evening when her mum’s phone
rang?

A: What did you do yesterday evening, Anna?

B: Well, I was supposed to look after my five-year-old cousin as my mom promised my aunt I would. They were planning to go out for dinner together. However, the day before yesterday, I found out that a friend of mine was taking part in a singing contest on TV the same evening. So I phoned my mom immediately to cancel the babysitting and my aunt had to find someone else to do the job. My mom wasn’t happy about it, but said okay if I cleaned my room before the contest started. Later when mom came home, my aunt rang and my mom canceled the babysitting for me. The following day when I was finally watching the show after cleaning, I realized my mom had left her phone at home. I heard somebody trying to get in touch with her just as my friend went on stage, exactly like last week when my mom’s phone rang just as I was finishing my school project.

4. What is out of order in Mike’s office?

A: Mike, can you print something for me in your office? My printer is broken.

B: Sure, just a minute. My laptop is a bit slow, but they told me they only replace those which are out of order.

A: Ah, that’s typical of our IT department. But listen, my office phone broke a month ago, and I’m still waiting for a new one.

B: Really? Mine stopped working on Friday, and I got a new one immediately.

A: Lucky you.

B: You think so? There’s money for expensive phones, but not for something as simple as a mouse that works. I’ve asked them to fix mine several times, and I’m still waiting.

A: Oh, would you like to borrow one from our office, Mike?

B: No, thanks. I’ll wait.

A: Anyway, thanks for letting me use the printer.

A: Welcome back, Sean. How are you?

B: I’m fine, Melissa. Thanks for looking after my flat. I’ll do the same for you when you’re away.

A: That’s very nice of you, Sean. I hope to go on holiday soon. I don’t go on business trips like the one you’ve just returned from, that’s right. Was it successful?

B: Yes, it was, but now I’m really looking forward to my holiday. Anyway, how’s Bob the parrot?

A: I’ve got bad news.

B: What happened?

A: I’m so sorry. See, I was feeding your parrot in the living room an hour ago, and he looked lonely, so I opened the cage to let him fly around the room. I made sure I didn’t forget to close the window in the living room, but I failed to do the same in the bedroom, and he took off. I’m so sorry, Sean.

B: Oh, no, Bob was a gift.

A: I know, from your ex-girlfriend.

B: It was actually my ex-girlfriend’s mom who gave me the bird. She loved parrots, but me? Honestly, I only had him a couple of months, and yes, I liked him at first, but when I think about him, I only see the mess he made that I had to clean every day and how loud he was. He often started screaming when I wanted to relax. It was all extremely annoying. Anyway, are you saying it happened a moment ago? Perhaps he won’t be far.

A: So, let’s look for him together. Or wait, why don’t you put the cage in the window and wait to see if he comes back?

B: You know, I would rather not leave the cage in the open window while I’m not at home.

A. If you leave it there, I’ll check it for you.

B: Well, let’s try it then.

A: I can check it for you anytime you’re out. I stopped working for the restaurant last week and I’ve been looking for something since then.

B: I’m sure you won’t be unemployed for long. I know how hard-working you are. Oh, look, I brought you something.

A: Oh, Sean, is it a box of chocolates?

B: Well, instead of a box of chocolates, I brought you back a book about making chocolate.

A: Oh, I hardly deserve a present. Thanks a lot, and I would really like to do something for you. So, if the parrot comes back, I could help you with him. I wanted to have my own parrot when I was a child. It was my greatest wish. My parents used to tell me that they’d buy me a parrot. However, it was just talk.

3. část poslechu

A: Welcome to our podcast series about people who have made their dreams come true. Today, I’m with Josh Burke in his mountain hotel. Josh, how did it all begin?

B: Well, my parents wanted me to become a lawyer. However, I started working as a journalist in London instead of working as a lawyer after finishing university. Soon, I realized that city life wasn’t for me and started thinking about building a hotel in the mountains. That was in 1993, but I didn’t leave my job until 1996 when I had saved enough money. In that year, I began building the hotel, and in 1998, all the work was done. I decided to name it after my grandfather as he had always wanted to have a hotel of his own. Therefore, its name is the SoutheY Hotel, spelled S-O-U-T-H-E-Y.

I’m happy here, but I also need to pay back the loan that I took from the bank. Although I had 40,000 pounds saved to be able to build the hotel, in the end, I spent 240,000 pounds on it. So it’s 200,000 pounds that I still owe the bank.

In the first year, I had almost no guests. Luckily, my parents, who came to stay before anybody else, supported me. They shared information about their stay in my hotel among their friends, and soon more guests started coming. Now you always have to book a room in advance, except for January when there are the fewest guests here. For June, the busiest month, on the other hand, you need to make your reservation already in February.

Guests usually come here to enjoy the countryside. In winter, most of them go hiking, and in summer, a very popular free time activity around here is horse riding. However, my advice to them is go climbing because that’s typical for our region. As for me, well, I feel sad that I can no longer go to the theaters because there aren’t any, and I miss them. But anyway, I’m still sure that moving here was worth it.

21. Where is it sunny now?

That was the 10:00 AM news. Now welcome to the weather forecast. Let’s see what the weather is like today. In the north of the country, it’s very windy and cold without any sun. There’s a chance of some rain too, so don’t leave home without your umbrella. The temperature is around 10 degrees. In the east, it’s rainy all day today, I’m afraid. There may be a thunderstorm in the afternoon. The temperature is a bit higher at around 13 degrees even though the sun is behind the clouds. In the west of the country, it’s very dry and the sky is clear, so you’ll have to wait until next week for rain and clouds. It’s quite windy and the temperature is just 10 degrees. The south of the country has the warmest weather today. It is and will be cloudy for most of the day but hopefully sunny this afternoon. The temperature is around 15 degrees.

22. Why has Astrid decided to run a marathon?

A: Hi Astrid, I’ve heard you’re getting ready for a marathon. Am I still good enough to go running with you?

B: Don’t worry. It’ll be okay. As far as I remember, it has always been your dream to finish a marathon.

A: I thought every runner would like to try it one day.

B: Well, I know many runners and just a few want to run a marathon to make a dream come true. Imagine, some girls decide to run a marathon because they want to make their partners proud.

A: Really? I’ve also heard that some people run this race instead of somebody who is sick.

B: Like me. My friend signed up but can’t take part now.

A: I see. So you’re helping her not to lose the start fee?

B: Yes, and when I accepted her offer, she even sold me her race number for half the price. And as I often help charity, I got the idea to send the second half of the fee to the charity supported by the marathon organizers.

A: How cool. I’m proud of you.

B. Thanks. And I’m sure you will make your dream come true.

23. What does the man think about online shopping?

When I did online shopping for the first time, I thought I’d only try it once and then go back to the shopping mall. But I was amazed how comfortable it was. I was really happy that I didn’t have to plan ahead for anything. I just sat down at my computer and that was it. The truth is that later I experienced sellers sending me the wrong goods and had problems getting my money back from them. What also happened to me was that some sellers just took my money and never delivered the goods. In the beginning, it seemed that by shopping online, I would save a lot of time. I also calculated that apart from that, I’d save money on petrol. However, I ended up buying more things, so in the end, shopping online didn’t turn out to be cheaper for me. Online, there are even more products, so choosing them takes me more time. But still, I consider this way very convenient for me.

24. Where has Janie put the money box key this time?

A: Steve, have you got the money box key?

B. No, Susan. Janie was the last to use it, but she isn’t coming today.

A: Janie usually puts it behind the desk calendar. I can’t see it here.

B: Let’s look under the keyboard then. I’ve seen her put the key there many times as well. Here it is!

A: Steve, this one’s bigger and a different shape.

B: We had one more hiding place. It was between two books. Well, Janie borrowed one, so that’s useless.

A: Okay, never mind. I just remembered that she sometimes puts the key into a cup on the desk. Let’s check it. Where’s the cup though? Can you see it?

B: It’s here and empty. Look! The key’s right here, in the first place you checked.

A: I’m glad we found it. How come I didn’t notice it before? We’d better put the key into the cup, right?
