- What kind of soup did Granny make for dinner today?
Today when I asked Granny about dinner, she said she was about to make tomato soup because she knows I like it. Mom makes tomato soup all the time at home, so I wanted something different. I suggested carrot soup, but Granny already had her idea. She said she was thinking of making onion soup. I told her many times that onions are hardly my favorite vegetable, but she obviously forgot. But then Granny found out that she had run out of onions. She looked into the cupboard and figured that she had just enough peas to make soup from, so she made that one instead of the onion soup. I’ve never liked pea soup much. Anyway, I guess I shouldn’t complain as she wanted to please me from the very start with the tomato soup. I hope that some other time Granny will make carrot soup.

2. What is Alice going to do next weekend?
A: Hi, Andrew.
B: Hi, Alice. What are you doing next weekend?
A: Hmm, I promised to help my parents in their garden. Autumn is the busiest time of year there.
B: Are you going to pick apples as you did in previous years?
A: Well, apples have already been collected. Now it’s time to get wood ready for the winter and plant new trees to replace those that have been cut down.
B: I thought the best season for it is spring.
A: You’re right, but autumn is equally good for planting trees. Anyway, my parents told me that they’ve already done it. They’ll only need help with preparing the firewood. At least cutting it is what I’m ready for.
B: I also offered to help them with dry leaves, but they told me there was no hurry as there are still so many up on the branches.
A: So you will spend one more weekend there because of the leaves.
B: Hmm, it might be necessary. And for that help I’m going to get a lot of apples.

3. What does Robert’s dog look like?
A: Hi Barbara.
B: Hi Robert. What a nice dog!
A: It’s Max, my new dog. I always wished I had a dog, but my parents refused to even hear about it. Especially not about a big dog. Fortunately, our neighbors bought one a few years ago. It was a small white dog and my mum fell in love with it. That actually helped me to get my own dog.
B: Lucky you. I dreamt of having at least a small dog when I was little. I thought that a dog with long white hair could appear quite big.
A: Really? I used to wish my dog had short hair because I didn’t like the way dogs with long hair smelt. Anyway, now with Max I see long hair isn’t a problem at all. I’m okay with the hair he has and I like its color as well.
B: Oh yes, when I look at Max, I agree his hair color is nicer than the white I wanted.
A: Thanks. And I’m also glad he isn’t the size of our neighbor’s dog. With that one I learnt that a small dog is less fun to play with.

4. What profession does the student think would be best for him?
What profession would be the best for me? See, when I was a kid, I wanted to be a barber. If I ever became one, I know I’d want to be the best. My parents think a nurse would be the best profession for me. I could still work with people, they say, but I’d have a better salary. But I can’t deal with stress very well, so I am sure it will be best if I became something other than a nurse. I’ve also realized that working with machines is a job that fits me more than working directly with people. That’s why I consider repairing vehicles perfect work for me. In a way, it’s similar to being a barber because you stand all day and use tools. It’s the same with being a chef. Though I do love cooking, working in the kitchen tends to be very stressful. Just like being a nurse, right? What about you?

A: Welcome back, Ruth. Did you and your mom have a fun holiday in Spain? I heard you took a sightseeing train to get to your hotel from Barcelona. Sounds cool.
B: Hey, Tom. All of the photos on the travel agency’s website showed a nice train with a few people looking out of the window. However, reality turned out to be quite different. Instead of a comfortable, almost empty train, we found ourselves pressed against one of the doors by other travelers. I wish our experience with transport in Spain had been a nice one.
A: Oh, yeah. Website photos are meant to sell. I know that, unlike me, a lot of people choose their holiday destinations according to them. I prefer reading through travelers’ opinions on social media rather than just looking at photos online. Anyway, what a way to start your holiday.
B: That’s right. My mom, on the other hand, didn’t seem to mind at all. She even remained calm after losing her sunglasses. Meanwhile, I was the only one who was stressed on our holiday.
A: I bet it was also because you were with her. You studied Spanish, which I’m sure was a great help.
B: Well, even though you might think I spoke Spanish a lot, everyone we met knew a few words in English. I had very limited opportunities to practice their language. And to be honest, there were hardly any staff members at our hotel.
A: How come? Where did you stay?
B: We stayed in a hotel with smart technology.
A: Really?
B: Come on. You’ve heard of smart hotels before. You always follow the latest technology updates.
A: Yeah. However, I’ve only heard of smart homes, and I’m actually trying to set one up. But you’re the first person to tell me about such a hotel. Tell me more.
B: Well, in this smart hotel, you have to download their app, and your smartphone basically becomes the room key.
A: I’m surprised you tried something like that.
B: You’re right. I’m not an IT person, and using apps is generally difficult for me. Using this one, though, was the exact opposite.
A: Nice. So, how expensive was the stay?
B: I was hoping for a discount since we came before the summer. However, after paying the whole sum, I only received a discount offer for my next stay in this hotel. I would still like to go back one day. And what about you? Are you going abroad this year?
A: I was planning to go hiking in New Zealand for my holiday this year. My friend invited me there, and I loved the idea until my neighbors gave me a new puppy. Now I don’t mind staying at home for a change as he’s so much fun. In fact, this year might be one of my best holidays ever.

Britain’s best garden.
Good morning. You’re listening to Gardener’s Time. Today, we will talk about one of Britain’s most beautiful gardens. You can find it in the West Midlands in the town of Walsall. It is on the street called Buchan Road, spelled B-U-C-H-A-N. Everyone there will tell you where the garden is. The garden belongs to Tony Newton and his wife, Mary, both 71 years old, who spent 38 years working in their garden to become the winners of Britain’s Best Garden one day. They started working on their garden in 1982, but until 2020, they didn’t receive the prize. As they say, you don’t need to be a professional gardener to have the most beautiful garden. The Newtons both worked their whole lives in a hospital, so even a nurse like Mary or a doctor like Tony can manage it.
Although the garden is private, there is still the possibility to visit. So far, over 14,000 visitors have seen this beautiful place. Entry is limited to groups of 10 people. 15 groups can visit the garden in one day. Be aware of that. Before you go there, please note that the garden is not open to the public in any season except summer. You might think spring is the best season for visitors to come and see the garden, but it is very busy for the owners. The garden is often called the Four Season Garden. That’s because of the hundreds of various colors you can see there during the whole year. It’s difficult to choose the most beautiful one. My favorite color in the garden is yellow, unlike the owner’s, which is definitely orange.
Every year, they try to make something new there. They even created a lake there in 2005, and a bridge was made in the garden some years later. The Newtons never get bored and spend hours every day taking care of their garden. And when they can’t work there in winter, they enjoy watching birds in their little tree house. Thank you for listening.

21. How much did Jill spend in Bands and Markers today altogether?
A: Jill. I’ve heard there are some great sales at Bands and Markers today.
B: Oh yeah, like sunglasses for just 4 pounds. I’ve just been there to buy some, but the ones I liked were not on sale. They cost 7 pounds and although they were really nice, I would only spend 4 pounds at most on any sunglasses. However, they had nice T-shirts on sale for 7 pounds. And guess what? When I went to pay for one, the shop assistant told me that if I bought 2, the price would only be 5 pounds each. 2 T-shirts for just 10 pounds. So I was happy to save 4 more pounds and bought them. And what’s more, Martin, if you buy something there today, you can choose a gift. I picked this summer hat. It cost 5 pounds, but I got it for free. You must go there right away.

22. Why is Eve moving?
A: Hi Eve. I heard you were moving.
B: Yes, Fred. I actually got the idea last year. I thought my flat was too small for me. Then I organized it differently and could put off moving. But it’s necessary now.
A: I thought you liked it there.
B: That’s right. I’d rather avoid moving, especially because my flat is close to my parents and I can be at their place very quickly when they need my help.
A: Why then? Did the owner ask you to pay more for the flat?
B: Oh, rents are higher here than in other parts of town, but my rent is fair for such a small flat. You know, I don’t complain very often, just the couple on my floor.
A: Yes, I heard them. See, everybody screams when arguing sometimes.
B: Well, I wouldn’t move if it happened once. Anyway, even though the present rent is higher than what the flat owner suggested for next year, I’m still moving.

23. How is Mr. Quinn feeling now?
A: So, Mr. Quinn, how are you feeling? Does your stomach still hurt?
B: I feel better, doctor. Thank you. You saved me. It hurt so much. I remember being unable to think clearly. It was my wife who had to call the ambulance. It was scary. I’m glad I’m free of pain now and in a cosy bed and I’m relaxing. I hope I won’t feel confused like that again. I told my wife that being worried or nervous is unnecessary now. And that light breakfast was good. I’m still full, but I’m already looking forward to lunch.

24. What Christmas present did Johnny decide to give to his girlfriend this year?
A: Have you done all your Christmas shopping, Johnny?
B: Almost, Meryl. I just need something for my girlfriend.
A: Well, I usually give my boyfriend a luxury cheese pack.
B: I’ve given my girlfriend cheese a few times. This year I’d like to be more original.
A: How about a food voucher? Then she can choose the things herself.
B: I’ve thought about a food voucher before. This time I’ve decided to be more personal. I’d like to give her something that proves I care for her.
A: Hmm, so what does she like then?
B: Cheese. Relaxing with books. Cooking. Actually, she’s been thinking of going to the spa. However, I’ve decided to surprise her with a spa weekend on a different occasion than Christmas. You know what? I’ll go to the shop and look for a good book of recipes she might try.
A: A cookbook’s not a bad choice, but I’m sure a food voucher would also be good.
B: Thanks for the tip, but I’ll go with my idea.
